FUE vs DHI: understand the plan, not just the label

Last reviewed: 12 August 2026General patient information

FUE and DHI are often presented as competing products. In a responsible discussion, the better question is how a proposed technique relates to your donor area, recipient area and long-term plan.

Ask about your own case

What FUE usually means

FUE is commonly used to describe individual follicular-unit extraction from a donor area. The term does not, by itself, tell you the full design, placement method, team roles or aftercare plan.

Ask how the donor area will be assessed and protected, what is realistically available over time, and how your existing hair is considered in the design.

What DHI usually means

DHI is commonly used to describe placement with an implanter pen. Clinics may use the term differently, so it is sensible to ask precisely what it means within your individual plan.

The important issue is not whether a label sounds more advanced, but whether the clinician can explain why the proposed approach is appropriate for your hair characteristics and goals.

The questions that lead to a better comparison

Ask who will assess you, what the design is intended to achieve, how the donor area is protected, what each person does during treatment, what aftercare is included and how concerns are handled after you travel home.

A written answer to these questions is more informative than a generic claim that one technique is universally better.
